Programme Structure
Session Outline
-
Session 1: Explanatory versus exploratory presentation
Understanding the difference and why it changes every decision you make about what to include. Exercises in identifying the single most important finding in a dataset.
-
Session 2: Chart selection and the cost of the wrong choice
When bar charts, line charts, and scatter plots work and when they mislead. How to choose based on the relationship you are showing, not habit or aesthetics.
-
Session 3: Annotation, titles, and slide-level argument
Writing titles that state the finding rather than describe the chart. Using annotation to guide attention. Practice with participant slides.
-
Session 4: Communicating uncertainty without losing credibility
How to present confidence intervals, caveats, and limitations in ways that are honest without making the audience dismiss the entire analysis.
-
Session 5: Presenting live and handling technical questions
Delivering a data presentation to a simulated non-technical audience. Managing questions that challenge methodology or ask for more detail than is useful to provide in the room.
Between-session practice tasks
After each session, participants receive a short task, typically 20 to 30 minutes of work. These are reviewed briefly at the start of the following session. Completion is not mandatory but those who do the tasks consistently get more from the course.
